Easy to Peel Citrus… Great for Kids
There is something exotic about going outside to pick your own citrus fruit, and with the Owari Satsuma Tree, that is just what you will be able to do!
Satsumas are the small, easy-to-peel fruit that children and adults love to snack on. The peel comes away from the sweet fruit easily, making this a healthy, no-mess treat.
Satsuma trees are dwarf in size and compact enough for a container. If you live in a frost-free part of the country, they can be planted in the ground. Usually only reaching a max height of just 10 feet, they are easy to move into a cool, sunny room for the winter.
They can also be pruned to form small bushes or made into topiary forms such as a ball on an upright stem. The trees will maintain that fresh green foliage throughout the winter, making this a delightful tree all year round.
Like all citrus trees, the Satsuma thrives in full sun. They do require a regular watering schedule in the summer to help the fruit ripen.
Lightly-scented flowers appear in late winter, giving way to small green fruit that slowly ripens over the summer. If your tree is indoors when it flowers, you will want to hand-pollinate to get the maximum harvest from the tree. This is easy to do with a cotton wool ball – just dab the flowers and the pollen will be deposited on the cotton wool. Dabbing several flowers, one after the other, will transfer the pollen from one flower to the next and pollination will occur.
The resulting fruit will slowly ripen over the summer and be ready to harvest from late summer all the way through early winter, if it does not get too cold.
You no longer need a large, heated greenhouse to accommodate bulky citrus trees; a sunny window is fine. Even with a small Satsuma, you can pick fresh fruit for breakfast in November from your very own citrus tree!
